1950's Science-Fiction Timeline

The following is a chronological guide to science-fiction in the 1950s, a shopping list for those just starting out on this fantastic odyssey. Those titles highlighted in blue indicate films that I consider important, either for reasons of influence and generic development, commercial succcess, or sheer entertainment value. As with any list of this nature there may be some titles I have overlooked. If this is the case I'd like to call on the limitless knowledge of my esteemed readership to let me know, and I will be only too glad to add the titles. Also if there are films that are not highlighted that you believe deserve recognition, please feel free to leave a comment briefly explaining why, and I'll be sure to make the change.

  1. Good to see some of Hammer's early SF films on your list!

There are quite a few titles there I'm going to have to track down.

  2. Just looking over the list, Shaun, the only two that I noticed not on here were SPACE CHILDREN (1958) and THE SHE CREATURE (1956). Might be more, but those two were all that came to mind at the moment.

  3. Cheers Brian - I shall duly add those two. I surprised myself forgetting about SPACE CHILDREN. I also noticed the Corman flick THE WASP WOMAN isn't on there.

  4. There's also PRINCE OF SPACE (1959), a Japanese sci fi flick. HALF HUMAN is from 1955 and translates to ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN in Japanese. If you include Yeti movies, I guess THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN OF THE HIMALAYAS (1957), SNOW CREATURE (1954) and MAN BEAST (1956) would count?

Oh, and Corman's DAY THE WORLD ENDED (1955) and possibly BEAST FROM THE HAUNTED CAVE (1959) would also count. Also the British sci fi flick, THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (1959).

  5. Excellent stuff Brian, I knew I could rely on you to add more to the list. I've nothing against Yeti movies, so I'll certainly include them. I'm surprised I forgot THE GIANT BEHEMOTH because as you say its a brit flick, and normally British cinema is to the forefront of my mind...many thanks!

  6. Honestly, Shaun, compiling such a list is quite a massive undertaking in itself. You've done an incredible job dedicating a lot of space to these pictures.

And I just remembered one I saw as a kid on the great and long gone channel 13, THE MAN WITHOUT A BODY (1957). This might be a toss up between being horror or science fiction, though.

  7. Does anyone remember an old black and white flick with the actors running from foam leaching into caves and they ran to escape it?
