  1. Yes, Shaun! Yes! God, how I love this stuff so! So sorry for not getting to them until just now, but I've been busy building a long-overdue tumbr for my photography (among other things!), and have been waiting to get to these for the past couple of days now! I especially like the MAN HUNTER posters and am sort of surprised that I've never seen any of them (before) on my internet poster-wanderings! And while I am very enthusiastic about some of his later stuff, there is no doubt in my mind that THE KEEP and THIEF take the cake! The latter edging out the first, of course, since it is by far one of the most original, wholly unique one-sheet concepts ever designed! But that's just my opinion... oh, and you've inspired me to buy an original (if I can!) for myself, buddy.

Which is your favorite, amigo? I'm guessing THE KEEP is in your top three. Besides my top two, I'd say the first MAN HUNTER for me, then the wider of the LAST OF THE MOHICANS - now that I look it, it's a very dynamic, yet simple bit of artistry... the desperate motion captured in it... fucking dynamite, baby! Spell that: D.Y.N.A.M.I.T.E. Yeah! Yeah!

  2. I'm glad you enjoyed the poster gallery Greg, I had a feeling you might! I'd be very interested to peruse your photographic chronicle on Tumblr, if you have a link I'd most appreciate it.

I thought I'd discover more diverse poster images for THIEF and THE KEEP, but these seem to be pretty much the standard art that was used throughout the world. Though thief did get released under the title VIOLENT STREETS I was unable to find a poster of sufficient quality. The second MANHUNTER poster took me by surprise, I'd never seen that one before. I have to confess that Mann's films post MANHUNTER haven't really interested me much at all. Obviously HEAT has a certain appeal, but Mann's films from LAST OF THE MOHICANS onwards became overlong and bloated in my view. The nadir was THE INSIDER, though a worthy subject, and with two fine lead actors, it was completely boring. ALI I haven't even seen and have no intention of seeing. I prefer the John Milius treatment of the Dillinger narrative in his film entitled DILLINGER...Warren Oates is far more successful in the role than Johnny Depp. In fact it was Englishman Christian Bale that saved PUBLIC ENEMIES in my opinion.

Favourite poster? Yes either THE KEEP or THIEF. I've always thought the poster for THIEF gives it almost a science-fictional look...or is that just me?

  3. That second 'Manhunter' US one-sheet makes it appear to be some kind of 'Dirty Harry' clone. What a shame, even if the image itself is somewhat eye-catching in a downmarket/exploitation kind of way (reminiscent of the Italian police films of the 70s and 80s).

  4. Yes a totally unrepresentative poster for the dark psychological thriller that MANHUNTER turned out to be. I think that's way I like it. I love poster designs that totally cheat the audience! :-)

  5. Hi Shaun,
I'm a big MM/Thief fan ... great movie by a great producer, an idea where I can get a poster size image of Thief? Yep, It's one of my favorite movies of all times.!

    Cheers,
    Craig
