KINSKI ON HERZOG
Herzog is a miserable, hateful, malevolent, avaricious, money-hungry, nasty, sadistic, treacherous, cowardly creep...he should be thrown alive to the crocodiles! An anaconda should strangle him slowly! A poisonous spider should sting him and paralyze his lungs! The most venomous serpent should bite him and make his brain explode! No—panther claws should rip open his throat—that would be much too good for him! Huge red ants should piss into his lying eyes and gobble up his balls and his guts! He should catch the plague! His speech is clumsy, with a toad like indolence, long winded, pedantic, choppy. Shaun, I loved those Werner Herzog quotes. Mr. Herzog and I seem to come from the same freaking universe, I love how his mind works, I loved that quote where he talks about storyboards being for cowards! There is an amount of sporadic spontaneity that happens when shooting a film, where if you use your creativity, you can come up with shots that were never planned, but end up being magic.
ReplyDeleteWow, Kinskis comments, so eloquent and filled with hatred. I wonder where their hatred came from. Its strange that they hated each other so much, they made such amazing films together. I sometimes wonder if their hatred was really just an elaborate hoax or something...
ReplyDeleteCheers Franco! - I heartily endorse the book HERZOG ON HERZOG edited by Paul Cronin and published by Faber & Faber - its effectively a book long interview and is jam packed with quotes like the above.
ReplyDeleteI think Herzog & Kinski had admiration and respect for one another, and when not working on the films had a cordial and friendly relationship. Its a well known fact that Herzog collaborated to a certain extent on the vitriolic comments that appeared in his book - the logic being that nobody would buy the book if Kinski only said nice things.

ReplyDeletePerfectly fitting quote considering the one Herzog film I have seen in NOSFERATU, looking forward to experiencing more of his films in the coming years!
